Short Stories

  • ‘White Rhodesia was not Africa: it was England in the tropics’ An interview, conducted by Tinashe Mushakavanhu, mostly about my novels Soldier Blue and The Secret of Old Mukiwa and the idea (or impossibility) of being a white African writer.
  • ‘The Flat’ is my first published story (1986) in Contrast about a flat that is overrun by cockroaches. The resident has no choice but to exterminate them all, with dire consequences. Seen by some as an allegory of the ‘swart gevaar‘ in Apartheid South Africa of the eighties.
